❶ An important note from the owner of Page One
Why you haven't received a daily newsletter from us in a few weeks ...
📢 You may have noticed you stopped receiving a daily edition of Page One each Monday through Friday. Here’s why 📢
→ We’ve made the difficult decision to press pause on publishing the Page One newsletter for an undetermined period of time.
→ Page One is not going out of business and we hope to return to daily publication possibly in early October.
→ In the meantime, we are assessing the business landscape and the best ways for Page One to be financially viable into the future. Unfortunately, headwinds in the advertising market have made it difficult to generate enough revenue to operate at this time.
→ Some of you have reached out asking where your daily newsletter from Page One has been. Apologies for suddenly going dark.
→ As I mentioned, we are trying to find the right balance that allows Page One to be useful to subscribers as well as a profitable business. One option is implementing a low monthly subscription fee. The other is making Page One a weekly newsletter instead of one that publishes 5 days a week.
→ If we move to a subscription model, I’m not saying you will definitely be required to pay a monthly fee to continue receiving Page One — although, in the interest of transparency, that could happen. But I’d like to avoid that as much as possible. I want you to consider what you’d think of a $4 monthly subscription fee. I’ve always wanted to keep Page One free. This price would make it almost free. A subscriber would get about 20 hand-curated newsletters a month, linking you to some content that is otherwise hidden behind paywalls (Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, etc.), delivered to your inbox for less than a cup of coffee at Starbucks costs. Payment would be made with a credit card. (If possible, my goal is to grandfather in all existing subscribers as free and begin charging new subscribers when Page One resumes publishing.)
→ A weekly newsletter model would continue to be ad-supported, but, editorially, would be more like an expanded Readable section featuring about 7-10 curated stories sent to your inbox on Saturday or Sunday, and wouldn’t focus on the news of the day, and buzzy stories that drive pop culture.
→ Take a moment to complete the short survey below, and feel free to leave any comments about the options, or what you have found useful (or not) about Page One.
📊 Do you think Page One is a product worth paying a monthly subscription fee of $4 ($48 a year) to receive it every Monday through Friday? Please comment with any feedback. If your answer is 'no,' what monthly price would you consider paying, if any? |
📊 Would you prefer to see Page One become a free weekly newsletter that arrives over the weekend and contains 7-10 feature stories rather than daily news?Feel free to leave a comment or any feedback about your experiences with and expectations of Page One. |
All the best,
